Again year started with a very dry spring and we missed the warm March summer. Then came the rains and widespread flooding during the first bank holiday weekend. It would have been a quicker run, but dangerous. So we are waiting for better weather.
New Start at Muntons
Whilst Muntons have not given express permission you can access the river just over the bridge at their main entrance. The foot path runs either side and the best place to get canoes into the water is via the footpath on the right hand side, virtually under the bridge. Post code is IP14 2AG
After unloading, cars can be parked on the grass verge on the opposite side of the road. Avoid parking on Muntons frontage/land.
Timetable for Muntons start
Arrived 9.15 am for 9.30 start at Muntons Maltings in Needham road.
Mid Morning Break at Needham Lakes around 11.00 am.
Lunch at Great Blakenham - at Lock/Road bridge or in Chequers Pub close by.
Tea Break late afternoon - Bramford Picnic area .
Finish 6.30 to 7.00 pm at Yarmouth Rd Suffolk retail park by the 'Range'.
As per guides apart from Baylham Lock (Rare Breeds centre).
Works to the lock now completed but impassable gauge weir in middle of lock, one meter high.
Fork Right and shoot small weir, under road bridge and join main river downstream.
Another dry winter but not as windy as last year.
Report and photos from the successful yet windy adventure in 2010.
Given lack of water we to started further down where the river and the main road from Stowmarket to Needham market meet at the entrance to Muntons Maltings.
Weather was good if a little cold for the second successful expedition on 2009.
